Before you pay for a container of wax from China, ask for the certificate of analysis. A COA is a factory's per-batch report: what one batch measured, tied to one batch number. It is the fastest paper check to verify quality of wholesale wax from China before money moves — and the reason we attach one to every batch we ship. This guide explains how to read a wax certificate of analysis: which lines matter first, what the melting point tells you about your own process, and how a batch COA differs from a product page and from a certification. You also get a question checklist for suppliers and sample tests to run before you commit.
What a COA is — and what it is not
A certificate of analysis is a batch-level record. The factory tests samples from a production batch and prints the results: batch number, product name, appearance, and physical or chemical values such as melting point, flash point, and density. "Batch" is the operative word. A COA speaks about the wax actually made on a specific date — not about the product line in general.
A COA is not a marketing document, not a certification, and not a promise about future batches. It is a measured record of one batch. That narrow scope is exactly why it is useful.
Most COAs fit on one page. The value is not in the page count; it is in the discipline behind it. Someone tested that batch, recorded the results, and signed the paper. That is why the checks in this guide focus on method and traceability rather than on formatting.
Read these lines first
When you open a COA, check these three before anything else.
- Batch number and date. The batch number ties the paper to a physical lot. Keep it. If a problem shows up at your warehouse, the batch number lets you and the factory trace the exact wax you received. A COA without a batch number is a leaflet, not a record.
- Product name and grade. Confirm the name matches what you ordered: soy wax, jelly wax, sand wax, or the oil line. Factories often run similar products side by side, so the product name on the COA is your first consistency check against the order.
- Appearance. Color, form, and odor are the fastest indicators of a batch's state. Our 58°C soy wax, for example, is 100% pure soy in fine-grain form, with a 52°C flake option — the COA states which form you received. Yellowing, an off odor, or an unexpected grain size is visible before you melt anything.
Melting point: read it against your process
Melting point is the number candle makers check first, because it drives pour temperature, container choice, and fragrance load. Read it against what you plan to make, not in isolation.
Two examples from our own range. Our bulk soy wax is specified at a 58°C melting point (136°F), 100% pure soy in fine-grain form, with a 52°C flake option for makers who want a softer pour. Our jelly wax lists a 68°C melting point, a 56°C solidification point, a 230°C flash point, and a density between 0.83 and 0.96. Sand wax is a natural plant wax in pearl granules with a low melting point; its COA states that low range and the granular form, because both decide how you use it. The COA for any batch records the measured values, so you can check that what arrived matches the spec sheet you approved.
If the measured melting point drifts between batches, your candles will set differently — harder, softer, faster or slower. Ask the supplier what tolerance they hold around the stated value, and read each new COA against the last one you received.
Check the units as well as the number. A certificate stating 58°C describes the same wax as one stating 136°F; a certificate that mixes units, or omits them, is a reason to ask questions before you order rather than after.
Batch COA versus product-page claims
The product page describes the range: what the wax is designed to do. The COA describes one batch: what that wax measured. Both are needed, and they answer different questions. If a page says "soy wax, 58°C melting point," the COA is how you confirm that the batch in the container actually measures near 58°C and comes from soy.
Importers who skip this step buy the brochure. Importers who keep batch COAs on file buy the product — and they can prove it if a dispute ever arises.
Why we ship a COA with every batch
Every batch that leaves our factory passes internal QC, and the COA goes with it. There are three practical reasons, and all three serve the importer.
- Faster checks at your end. You can match the arrival against the COA in minutes instead of waiting on emails.
- Cleaner documentation. When your customer or your customs broker asks for product evidence, the batch COA is a simple answer.
- Easier troubleshooting. If a candle run misbehaves, the batch number narrows the search to one lot and one set of measured values.
Samples follow the same rule: the sample we send ships with the COA of its batch, so the wax in your hand and the numbers on the paper describe the same material.
Importers who reorder benefit most. After three or four shipments you hold a small history file: same product, same spec, melting point sitting in the same narrow band each time. That record is the practical definition of a consistent supplier — the numbers repeat because the formula and the raw materials repeat.
Questions to ask before you trust a COA
Treat the first COA as the opening answer, then ask:
- Does this COA cover the exact batch my sample came from? Is the batch number printed on both?
- What test method was used for each value — which standard, which instrument?
- What tolerance does the factory hold around the stated melting point?
- Will the production batch carry its own COA, or only the sample batch?
- Can I request the COA for a specific batch number after shipment?
- Who signs the COA, and is there internal QC data behind it?
These are normal purchasing questions. A factory with in-house QC answers them from records, not from memory.
A COA is not a certification
Two documents get confused in candle wax buying, and they play different roles.
A COA is issued by the manufacturer for each batch and reports measured values of that batch. It changes with every production run. A certification is issued under a defined standard or program, usually by an independent body, and confirms that a facility, a process, or a product meets a set of rules; it is typically valid for a period rather than per batch.
When a supplier mentions certifications, ask for the issuing body and the scope in writing, then check them against your own market's requirements. And keep the per-batch COA as the layer that covers the actual goods you receive.
Test the wax before you trust the paper
A COA measures chemistry. Your candles also depend on behavior, and behavior is checked in your own shop:
- Test burn. Pour a candle from the sample and burn it through. Check flame height, melt pool, and soot with the wick you plan to use.
- Pour a small batch. Melt, pour, and cure the wax exactly as you will in production. Check surface, adhesion, and set time.
- Check fragrance compatibility. Add your oil at your planned load. Look for separation, discoloration, or weak throw after curing.
- Store and re-check. Keep a sample of the batch and inspect it after a few weeks. Stability shows up later.
